Tentative Agenda for 1999 Meeting of Councils
On September 8, 1998 the Microcredit Summit Campaign Executive Committee approved the general outline of the 1999 Meeting of Councils (tentatively scheduled for Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire in June). The 1999 Meeting of Councils will focus deeply on a few key issues. Three or four hard-hitting papers, each focusing on a core theme, will be prepared and distributed before the meeting. Each paper will be discussed in a plenary session with its author and a panel of bilateral and multilateral donor agency heads or ministers. Papers topics will include:
- Impact on the Lives of Clients as a Measure of Program Success: Identifying Cost-Effective Impact Evaluation Tools for Practitioners
- How Donor Funds Could Better Reach and Support Microcredit Programs Working Toward the Summit’s Goal
- The Summit’s Challenge: Working Toward Institutional Sustainability while Maintaining a Commitment to Serving the Poorest Families
Instead of organizing 20 Meet the Challenge Sessions each day, a much smaller number of five-hour in-depth courses will be offered on topics related to the Summit’s core themes of serving the poorest families, reaching women, building sustainable institutions, and ensuring impact on the clients and their families. Course topics will include:
- National Frameworks for Success, the Appropriate Role for Governments: Establishing the Appropriate Legal Status, Regulation, and Policy for Microcredit Institutions, and Establishing Domestic Apex Funding Agencies for Microcredit Programs
- Cost-Effective Impact Evaluation Tools for Practitioners
- Planning for Institutional Financial Sustainability while Reaching the Poorest Families
- Entering the Field: The Basics on Starting a Microcredit Program, Especially in the African Context
The 1999 Meeting of Councils is limited to 600 delegates. Each delegate must represent a Council member institution that has completed a new (1999) Institutional Action Plan Summary form. Council member institutions will be invited to apply to present their Institutional Action Plans at the 1999 Meeting of Councils, although a smaller number of Action Plans will be presented than were at the 1998 meeting. More details about the 1999 Meeting of Councils and a registration brochure will be sent to all members of the mailing list in December.
