Volume 6, Issue 1: March 2008

Dear Friends,

Welcome to a new edition of Microcredit Summit E-News. In this issue, we showcase the important work that the Campaign and its members are doing to reach the poorest1 through microfinance. The articles in this issue include:

I am also happy to share more information about our upcoming Asia-Pacific Regional Microcredit Summit, to be held from July 28-30 in Bali, Indonesia. Gerakan Bersama Pengembangan Keuangan Mikro Indonesia (GEMA PKM) has proven to be an exceptional local host. When I visited Indonesia in late January, I was impressed with the GEMA PKM leadership and staff for their enthusiasm to serve as the local partner. I was equally energized by the level of enthusiasm and commitment on the part of the Indonesian government, including the Central Bank Governor, Mr. Burhanuddin Abdullah, who accepted our invitation to serve as Chair of the National Host Committee. First Lady Kristiani Herrawati will serve as the honorary co-chair of the National Host Committee. I hope you will join us in Bali and help us to forward the Campaign’s goals. Registration for the Summit is now open.

You will notice that we have changed the format of our newsletter, and we would very much like to hear your reactions to the contents of these pages. As you browse through this issue, please keep in mind our discussion forum as a venue for sharing your thoughts.

Warm wishes,

Sangita Sigdyal

1The Campaign defines “poorest” as those who are either in the bottom half of those living below their nation’s poverty line or living on less than US$1 a day (adjusted for purchasing power parity).
